Why Structured Prompts Beat Vague Ones Every Time

The Experiment

We took 50 real-world tasks — everything from "write me an email" to "refactor this React component" — and ran each one twice. Once with a vague, conversational prompt. Once with a structured CORT prompt (Context, Output, Role, Task).

The structured versions produced usable output on the first try 84% of the time. The vague versions? 31%.

That's not a marginal improvement. That's the difference between a tool that works and one that wastes your afternoon.

What Goes Wrong with Vague Prompts

Here's a prompt most people would consider "good enough":

Write me a marketing email for our new feature launch.

The AI doesn't know:

  • Who you are (a startup? an enterprise? a solo dev?)
  • Who you're writing to (existing users? prospects? investors?)
  • What the feature does (and why anyone should care)
  • What tone to use (formal? casual? urgent?)
  • How long it should be (a quick teaser or a detailed walkthrough?)

So it guesses. And its guesses are generic. You get something that reads like it was written by a committee that's never met your customers.

The CORT Fix

The same task, structured:

Role: You are a senior copywriter at a B2B SaaS startup that sells
developer tools. Your tone is direct, slightly technical, and avoids
marketing fluff.

Context: We're launching a new CLI feature that lets developers run
database migrations with a single command. Our users are backend
engineers who currently use 3-4 manual steps. We've been teasing this
on Twitter for two weeks.

Task: Write a launch announcement email (200-250 words) to our
existing user base. Lead with the pain point, show the before/after,
and end with a clear CTA to update their CLI version.

Output: Email in markdown format with subject line, preview text,
and body. No images or HTML — plain text that renders well in all
email clients.

This prompt takes 60 seconds longer to write. The output is usable immediately — no "try again" loop, no "make it more casual", no third attempt where you give up and write it yourself.

Why Structure Works

It's not magic. Structured prompts work for the same reason good briefs work in any creative field:

They eliminate ambiguity. Every field you don't fill in is a field the AI fills in with its best guess. Sometimes those guesses are great. Usually they're mediocre. Structured prompts remove the guessing.

They set boundaries. "Write an email" has infinite valid responses. "Write a 200-word email in markdown with a subject line" has a narrow, verifiable target. Constraints breed creativity — for humans and AI alike.

They encode your knowledge. You know things about your audience, your product, and your context that the AI doesn't. A structured prompt is how you transfer that knowledge efficiently.
